Or whatever one chooses to call it. Once i got over feeling miserable, i realised that maybe she had done the right thing. If she was still in love with somebody else, it really didn't make sense for her to enter into a relationship with me - it wouldn't have been right for either of us.
I recalled one of Ayn Rand's favourite themes - a woman who falls i love with one man, and then proceeds to fall in love with another. Remember Dagny Taggart from 'Atlas Shrugged', Kira from 'We, The Living' ? Of course Kira chooses the wrong man (according to me). Surprisingly Ayn Rand has less sympathy for a strong man with the right character, but the wrong ideals; than she does for somebody who is weak, but has the right ideals. Andre, the idealistic communist, gets treated far worse than Leo, the decadent lover of Kira. Leo is weak, but Rand thinks that he is better than the misguided, but idealistic Andre. Well, having made it very clear where my own sympathies lie, let me move on to the other question that i started out with.
Is it better to get out of a relaionship when you know that you no longer love that person, or that you love somebody more? I think the answer is a resounding Yes! As one of the characters in Atlas shrugged says (i've forgotten if it was Dagny, Rearden or D'Anconia) - to make that stupid sacrifice, by choosing to stay committed, you will ruin the happiness of all three people concerned!
There was a time when i'd trash any books that could be construed as 'psuedo-intellectual'. You know the type - the slim volume, the big letters, claiming to offer profound insights, or be written in beautiful prose that is almost poetry. For somebody raised on a diet of page-turners i guess it would seem inexplicable that people would actually enjoy reading such books. And if they didn't enjoy reading them, what other reason could they have than to flaunt their reading of it ;-) Now I'm finally over with the John Grishams and Jeffrey Archers of the world and turning to what i used to find pretentious earlier. Now that opens up a whole new line of thought and calls for some introspection ;-)
