The reviews of course! I'd rather read A.O. Scott dripping sarcasm over the bloated carcass of a hollywood flick than read a eulogy to a film so superb that any critic will find it tough to do it justice. His review of "The Da vinci code" was vicious, entirely too accurate (maybe not even scathing enough) and all too entertaining - which makes the awful book and the movie almost worth it - not their reading or viewing, but the fact that they were created. Maybe things happen for a reason ;-) Oh, that line reminds me of what prompted this post. A.O. Scott's review of Knight and Day - which seems to be even more funny than that of The Da Vinci Code - and by corollary, the film ought to be worse. Probably so bad that nobody ever comes out of the theater - having been literally bored to death. Now, that would be a superlative cinematic achievement.
No, I am not one of those connoisseurs so wrapped up in the art that I can appreciate only creations which are contrived purely as exercises to push the boundaries of the art. I am no fan of Agnas Varda. But I am of Godard, of Wong Kar Wai and Shunji Iwai. And Satyajit Ray - though an appreciation of Ray required me to remove myself from the squalor of his usual settings. Half kidding there, but then again, only half.
