Have you ever got the feeling of deja vu when you've read something? Happened to me twice or thrice over the last few weeks. First it was when I read Murakami's "The wild sheep chase". In it, The Rat writes "I didn't know that this is where I wanted to be, but now I feel that I've gotten where I wanted" or words to that effect. Don't have the book handy, so I can't get the quote right. Purists please excuse this transgression of literary bounds. But what I wanted to say was that I had the vague feeling of having read something similar somewhere. But the obvious million dollar question was, WHERE? It came in a flash, and I called up Kraz and asked him if he'd read the book. Didn't tell him why I wanted to know. He hadn't. I read him the lines and asked him if it sounded familiar. To others who have read his posts it must. http://wrecktangle.blogspot.com/2005/08/hyderabad.html
It happened again with other parts in The wild sheep chase. Though it wasn't similarities to Kraz's writing, but murakami's other books. Perhaps natural. But almost entire lines or themes being the same? I wonder if it is more than a coincidence.
Now it has happened again with Hari Kunzru's "The Impressionist". I can definitely see traces of Mr. Ripley in the protagonist. Maybe I missed my vocation. Should have taken up literature ;-)
