If we were to live forever....

I was reading the Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Murakami when one of the lines struck me as very profound and thought provoking. It said "If people lived forever - if they never got any older - if they could just go on living in this world, never dying, always healthy - do you think they'd bother to think hard about things?....People have to think seriously about what it means for them to be alive here and now because they are going to die sometime."
Isn't it true? I guess that is why we never think about such things when we are very young. At that age, when your whole life stretches before you and time seems to be something that is an immediate problem requiring attention, you are more likely to think of ways to kill time. You never stop to reflect, never pause to think if you are using your time well. Hell - you don't even bother to ask yourself if you are enjoying yourself! As long as you are whiling away time, it ought to be fun! But somewhere along those years, some people change. I've always been accused of being in too much of a hurry about everything in life. Who'd have patience if you haven't even achieved half the things you want to do in your life! Patience in my mind is inextricably intertwined with complacency. For quite some years now, i've found that i take the use of my time more and more seriously. I'm not saying that i don't do things that are fun, but that i make sure that they are really fun! To be really alive, i think that you have to have a sense of discrimination - about everything - food, music, movies, books, even people! After all there is only so much time to enjoy the things that you love! So why waste time on things which you don't!

Nice blog d00d. Enjoyed it. Just a ponit though. Do you believe life, in general, has a purpose? Or do you rely on the "God" concept for that part? Anyway, excellent wording of your thoughts. Wodehouse to thank in part,I guess...;-)

UG,

glad you are finding time to read Murakami. I mean how many people with the kind of sched you have would do that. the post itself sounded like something John Cusack would say in High Fidelity...esp the last part. As far as the question raised by HM goes..well, its a nice question isnt it, made nicer by the fact that its so purely hypothetical that any reasoning or thought applied to it can be made to sound reasonable.

Hi

John Doe: Glad u liked it. And 2 answer ur question, i do believe that life has a purpose - and it is to enjoy what you do, and not regret anything at the end of it. I'm flattered that you think my style has been inspired by wodehouse! If i could write even half as well as he did, i'd take up writing full time ;-)

Kraz: Yeah - can't really find 2 many enthusiasts for the likes of murakami here. There r a couple of guys though who are into reading off beat stuff too. High fidelity -hmmm ... that is one flick i wouldn't mind watching again! You hv it with u?
