When I told her that a prof had liked me for being offbeat back in B-school, she shot back with "You were considered offbeat! But you are the most conventional person I know". Narrated this to P. yesterday who came back with "Man! Either she doesn't know you or she has no clarity about things. Either way, it is bad news for you."
Which got me thinking. What exactly do you think makes a person be considered unconventional? Do typical career choices make one conventional? Wouldn't a very rational, very un-bohemian artist be unconventional while a typical bohemian type couldn't be considered as, well, unconventional! Just the same way, wouldn't someone like me and a couple of friends of mine who have rather different ideas from other people in the same peer group be more unconventional than an artist or a writer? And what is the whole deal about being unconventional anyway? Is it a badge of honor to be worn saying that "I refuse to conform. I refuse to be pigeonholed or stereotyped" or is it something that is supposed to mean that you are creative?
Wonder which one it is? Is she clueless about people in general or doesn't she know me at all? I'd like to think it is the latter. For my sake and hers.

I get the feeling that the UBERGEEK is unnecessarily worried about his GEEK status being not accepted by someone close to his heart.
Buddy, may be you should keep a low profile.Try composing a poem on her.
Hmmm...joe - i think u've got it all wrong here. I am no ubergeek. That is who I wanted to be. I am, ahem, a little technologically challenged ;-)
And no. It is all over. It will soon be someone else again :-)
Hey there,
How've you been? Interesting post here. You know I've always wondered about the same... just coz I make a so-called conventional choice of career, does it make me more conventional than a person who thinks conventionally but has an offbeat job? And who defines what is conventional anyways?
Just b'coz someone plays music, does it make them more creative or artistic? Even if they break up music into tiny technically independent, mechanical bits?
I don't really care either way. I think it's something to do with the fact that people like to be called unconventional. Perhaps it's cool or something.
